The competition aims to:

Develop young musicians through collaborative participation and by encouraging the enjoyment of performing with others.

Encompass a wide range of genres of music, including Western classical, jazz and African traditional music.

Make a valuable contribution towards the promotion of music in South Africa by creating a platform for skills and career development of young musicians.

The National Ensembles Competition was established in 1995 and was first presented by the Music Department of Hoër Meisieskool Bloemhof, under the leadership of Zorada Temmingh. The goal was to create an opportunity for school learners to compete in groups, rather than focusing on solo performances.Feedback from the initial competition was overwhelmingly positive, culminating in the decision to make it an annual event.

The performances will be adjudicated by a panel of widely recognised and experienced professional musicians.
